There is rarely a product that is not made from different raw materials. Often, fine end products such as coatings, pastes or fillers consist of insoluble, finely divided pigment and powder particles. In ball and bead mills, the raw materials are dispersed to homogenize the individual components. Grinding media are used to convert kinetic energy into a grinding effect.
Grinding media are available in ceramic, glass or steel. Ceramic grinding media are used wherever mixing effects and dispersion processes are the focus. In these applications, they are convincing due to their impact resistance and low wear. Steel grinding balls are already excellent grinding media due to their high net weight. They are equally suitable for wet and dry grinding and are often used in the medical industry or for grinding in aggressive acids and alkalis. Glass grinding media convince with their elasticity and are both lead-free and chemically neutral. Because of their suitability for processing food and their color fastness, they can be used just about anywhere.
When screening grinding media, it is important to ensure that the grinding elements are not larger than the mesh size, otherwise the elements could slip through the meshes with the product or get stuck in the screening mesh and no longer serve their intended purpose.
Best suited for precise screening of grinding media is the multi-deck screening machine RHEstack®. It achieves high purity for separations up to 4 mm due to prolonged residence times of the particles on the mesh. A modular system allows up to 15 screen decks to be arranged into a screen stack. This allows either numerous separations to be realized on just one machine or safety screen decks to be used. In addition, this machine is equipped with bouncing balls under the screen mesh, so that plugging grain is prevented.
Further possibilities for screening of grinding media with separation cuts up to 10 mm are offered by the screening machines RHEmoto® or RHEflex®. In the RHEmoto® vibrating screen, external unbalance motors transmit high-frequency vibrations directly into the screen mesh while the screen housing remains static. Even sticky materials are precisely separated thanks to these high accelerations. In addition, an automatic, adjustable cleaning system ensures that the screen mesh remains clog-free.
The RHEflex® linear vibrating screen is a robust and low-maintenance screening machine in which the entire screening unit is excited to linear vibration by means of two unbalanced motors. Uncomplicated classification with simultaneous material transport is no problem on this highly flexible machine.
